Arrgh-pple! Look bright shiny new operating system and a “server for everyone.” That’s a server for everyone who hasn’t used the last few versions. The price for the OS and server seem reasonable enough. The OS improvements are nifty if somewhat superficial (as far as I can tell). But what in the name of Jobs where they thinking with the server tools? Sorry, “Server Application.” “Lets make it so simple that anybody can run a server from home.” Gone are the simple-enough, elegant but powerful server tools of the past few Cats and in their place they’ve neutered the Lion with a tool that can only be described as a Tool ( in Ozzy slang a Tool is an idiot, fool, or wanker (tosser) ). With the old server admin I could set up name virtual hosts for web development so simply and easily. I’d look down on those poor fools with other operating systems typing away in their config files and feel so smug. Now I’m back to rooting around in the config files again – thanks a lot!

You can take simplicity too far you know. Here in Aus. all the power points (wall sockets) have switches on them. Americans are often surprised and confused by this. The switch makes it more complicated (and they work the opposite way to Yank switches). But you know what? They’re safer with switches on them because when they’re switched off you can’t stick stuff in the holes and electrocute yourself and what’s more the electricity can’t leak out and waste money . The moral is – there is simple and then there is idiot proof, or rather, proof of idiots. You’ve probably guessed by now which one I think Lion Server Application is.

Can we please have the old Server Admin Tools back? I promise not to electrocute myself.

The people’s server?! What’s next heir Steve? World domination? Whoops spoke to soon… iPod, iPod über alles, Ãœber alles in der Welt…

Here again is one of those Apples are so simple to use the feature is hidden from you things that gets me every time until somebody points it out to me. So I’m pointing it out for you.

Apple Mail is a great IMAP client especially for Gmail, that is once you have worked out how to make Apple Mail use Gmail’s folders for Drafts, Sent Items, Trash and Junk. Once you have Apple Mail (4) set up to use Gmail IMAP the next thing you do is find the Gmail folder equivalents to Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk in the list of folders Mail has downloaded from the cloud one by one the go to the Mailbox menu, then Use This Mailbox For…, then select either Drafts, Sent, Trash or Junk.

When Apple recently released updates to the iWork ’08 suite (Keynote, Pages & Numbers) I diligently downloaded and attempted to install the updates only to be faced with the above error message. Several Googles and the usual annoying number of “me toos” later I found the “please shoot me now”, oh so simple, solution. iWork ’08, by default, installs these apps into an “iWork 08″ folder under the Applications folder. If you move the apps, which I had (because every other Apple app goes straight into Applications – doesn’t it!), the updater can’t find them. I reinstalled iWork ’08 to its default folder (you probably could just move them) and low and behold the updater worked.

N.B. The same can apply to other Mac apps. So from now on I’m going to leave them in their default folder and if I want to be able to launch them from, say the Applications folder, I’m going to use sim-links.
